Believe it or not, food is the main driver in the senior living industry. People look forward to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, more than anything else when they’re in a nursing home. My name is Rich Crandall, and I serve as the chief financial officer and partner at Crandall Corporate Dietitians. We bring an entire package to your nursing home chain, your assisted living chain. Systems of how to operate a high-quality dietitian, some of the best in the industry, and then a menu program that can bring it all together for your residents. You don’t want to put a recipe on a menu being used by a thousand facilities unless you know it works. And so our dietitians and our chefs will go in and literally they will test a recipe before they put it into the computer program and before it goes on a menu.

What’s neat about Crandall Corporate Dietitians is it may be, not only is it the largest consulting dietitian firm, but it also may be the oldest. My mother started it 56 years ago when she was a registered dietitian in Southern California and it just grew from there. When I came out of school, my mother came to me and said, “Hey, why don’t you come join my firm and let’s grow it together?” And that was 1997, and I’ve been here ever since.

Our biggest financial challenges have always been collecting receivables. We pay our dietitians and then we wait anywhere from 30, 60, 90 days to get paid. So having a banking relationship where you can go to someone and explain your industry and they get it, that’s very, very critical to us. Before we start banking with Gateway, we were with one of the large national banks, and I know this is a cliche, but we truly felt like just a number. We’re trying to solve our financial issues and Gateway brought solutions to us. What I enjoy most about Gateway Bank, is that very personal relationship where they know me, they know my businesses, they know my family. We can have conversations about things that are happening in our community and in our companies. Don Thompson, who’s our head of lending, he has me come in once a year and sit down at their conference table and he’ll ask questions: What kind of growth are you looking for? What markets are you going to pursue? And really just get me to thinking about where are we going and what role would Gateway play in that growth that we’re expecting over the next 12 to 24 months.

Having a bank that can respond quickly and rapidly to your needs is so valuable. I would have no problem recommending Gateway Bank to anybody because I know that they’re going to be treated as well as I’m treated.
